Gwalior (Hindi: ग्वालियर, Gvāliyar ) is a town in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh on the edge of the Deccan and the Ganges plain with approximately one million inhabitants ( 2011 census ).
Economically important are shoes, textile, paper, cigarette and food industry. There is a university. The city is dominated by a historic fort (Fort Gwalior ). Featured Buildings are several Hindu temples from the 11th and 12th centuries as well as monumental sculptures of Jainism from the 15th century. The city was of about 1750-1818 capital of Marathenreichs, then until 1947 the capital of the princely state of Gwalior under British sovereignty.
Gwalior is the birthplace of composer Bansuriaspielers and Raghunath Seth.
