Description

Haageocereus australis grows prostrate with dark green to gray- green shoots, which reach a length of up to 1 meter in diameter 2-6 cm. There are twelve to 22 low ribs available. The one to two central spines are thickened at their base. They are darker than the radial spines and up to 4.5 inches long. 15 to 30 to the needle-like bristling spines have a length of up to 8 millimeters.

The white, fragrant flowers can reach a diameter of 3.5 cm and a length of 7 to 10 inches. The spherical, at first pink fruits are red later. They have a diameter of up to 4 cm.

Distribution and systematics

Haageocereus australis is widespread in Peru Arequipa and Moquegua in the regions as well as in Chile in the region of Tarapacá near the coast.

The first description was in 1936 by Curt Backeberg. A synonym is nomenklatorisches Binghamia australis ( Backeb. ) Werderm. ( incorrect name, ICBN article 11.4).
