Haaler Au

The Haaler Au ( rarely also called Haalerau ) is a river in Schleswig -Holstein.

Course

The Au drained part of the territory of the nature park Aukrug. She was originally a left ( south ) side of the river Eider. With the construction of the Kiel Canal, she was separated there. Since the leads Haaler Au in the channel. Just before it flows into the channel to form a small lake, which is separated by a bridge for the channel path along the canal. The last few miles before flowing into this lake a previously reclaimed area was flooded by digging passages in the dike to restore a wetland in this remote area on both sides of the Au.

The Haaler Au flows through, among others, the community Haale in the district of Rendsburg -Eckernförde, after which it was named. Inflows include Fuhlenau Death Büttler Au, Pulser Mühlenau, Osterstedter Au, Papenau and Wapelfelder Au. The river is navigable in the lower reaches for rowing boats and canoes.

Fauna

The Haaler Au is part of the natural ecosystem of the Schleswig- Holstein Geest and part of the coherent network of protected areas under the Habitats Directive. There occur as special representative of the birds Tundra Swan, White Star Bluethroat, kingfisher and marsh harrier and brook lamprey and loach. The mouth region of the Haaler Au is of great importance for bird life.
