Habib Chatty

Habib Chatty ( born August 9, 1916 in M'saken; † March 6, 1991 in Paris) was a Tunisian politician.

Biography

After schooling at the Collège Sadiki in Tunis he began in the late 1930s to work as a journalist and most recently as chief editor of the magazine Assabah.

In 1955 he was appointed Director of Information in the government of Prime Minister Tahar ben Ammar. In 1958 the rank of ambassador, he was awarded and as such was 1972 head of President Habib Bourguiba.

He was then appointed as the successor of Muhammad Masmudi as Foreign Minister in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Hedi Nouira on 14 January 1974. This office he held until his replacement by Mohamed Fitouri on 24 December 1977.

In January 1980, he was elected as Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) to succeed Amadou Karim Gaye and was replaced on 31 December 1984 by Syed Sharifuddin Pirzada. As Secretary General, he took in 1983 at the International Symposium on common principles, forms and themes in Islamic art part.
