Haegeum

The haegeum ( Hangeul 해금, Hanja奚 琴) is a two-string spike fiddle Korean tube.

It consists of a barrel-shaped wooden body, a neck and two silk strings, similar to the Chinese erhu. As with the erhu run the strings between the bar and horse hair of the bow string. Played it is like the erhu on the knees.

The haegeum is also related to the ancient Chinese and West Qinling today's Chinese erxian since the Korean as well as Japanese culture has been greatly influenced by Chinese culture. In East Africa, there is another area of distribution for tube spit violins, the best known is the Ugandan endingidi.

In the ceremonial Korean court music that plays Kegeloboe piri the melody and the haegeum supplemented along with the deeper sounding Streichzitzer ajaeng the melodic framework.

In the 20th century sohaegeum ( 소해금 ) was developed. It is a modernized form of haegeum. She comes from North Korea, and is therefore played mostly there.
