HaFraBa

HaFraBa eV is the short name of the association to prepare the highway Hanseatic cities -Frankfurt -Basel and thus the first major highway project in Germany.

The club was founded on November 6, 1926 as the Association for the construction of a road for motor vehicles in rapid transit from Hamburg via Frankfurt to Basel from road construction companies under the leadership of Robert Otzen and projected a motorway connection from Hamburg to Hannover and Frankfurt am Main to Basel ( and then continue through Switzerland to Genoa). The then planned route is similar to the outline of the current A 5 motorway ( between Heidelberg and Darmstadt, notwithstanding the A656, parts of the A 6 and A 67) and the northern part of the A 7

On 31 May 1928, the club was renamed the club to prepare the highway Hanseatic cities -Frankfurt -Basel to also include the Hanseatic cities of Bremen and Lübeck in the planning process can - it remained the abbreviation HaFraBa fittingly unchanged.

Since the public authorities did not recognize any need for the project, had been thought to finance a toll system. The calculations resulted in the following prices:

  • A car with driver: 3 penny per kilometer
  • Each additional person: 1 penny per kilometer
  • Trucks: 2 penny per kilometer
  • Loading: ½ penny per tonne per kilometer

The project initially met with rejection by the Nazis. After Hitler's takeover plans were partially accepted; the name of the association in " Society for the preparation of Reichsautobahnen " changed.
