Planning and Design

The planning and design phase began in January 1998. Planning and design were by a joint venture of Nippon Koei Company ( Japan), who made ​​Louis Berger International Inc. ( USA) and the Vietnamese Transport Engineering Design Corporation ( TEDI ).

Construction

The construction work was carried out mainly by a Vietnamese- Japanese joint venture Hazama - Cienco 6 and a joint venture between the Korean company Dong Ah and the Vietnamese Song Da Construction.

The main tunnel having a diameter of 11.9 m. A second, parallel to the main tunnel tunnel is currently used for maintenance and security purposes. A later extension to the traffic tunnel is being planned. Both tubes are connected by 15 branch tunnel. The tunnels are equipped with fire alarm, communications, water supply and ventilation systems.

Is currently being built on an extension to the railway tunnel.

Operation

The tunnel was officially opened on 5 June 2005.

Currently, the main tunnel has only one lane in each direction. For passenger cars and minibuses a drive-through fee of 25,000 VND will be charged. Motorcycles, bicycles and pedestrians are not permitted to transit / passage. As of November 2006 there should be a 24 -hour shuttle service. Shaping the prices for them are as follows: 12,000 VND for motorcycles, 5,000 VND for bicycles and 3,000 VND per person.

There is a small waiting area, can take pictures at the visitors, and an exhibition on the tunnel at both outputs.

The tunnel shortens the distance between Da Nang and Hue 20 km. This results in a time saving of one-half to one hour compared to the old route over the Hai Van Pass.
