Half-open file

A half-open line denotes a line in the game of chess, to which only one or more farmers are the same color ( cf. Bauer structures). Semi-open lines are a frequently encountered selling point. The missing second pawn on this line determines the appropriate use of heavy figures.

Strategic features

The page whose builder no longer exists, can use the half-open line to put pressure on the opponent's position. This usually happens due to the occupation of this line with major pieces, or by the blockade of the opposing pawns. To increase the effect of the placed on half-open lines of major pieces, one often seeks either full opening of such strokes, or trying to take over the terminal on the line opposing pawns.

The position of the sample chart has evolved from the so-called " Carlsbad pawn structure " developed (see also: Exchange Variation of the Queen's Gambit ), in which both sides with a minority attack attempt to exploit the respective half-open line for the towers. White tried using the lever b4 - b5 pawn to open the line, or the farmer to weaken on c6 after a conflict that Analog Black plan can be initiated with f5 - f4.

Openings

Semi-open lines often arise already out of the opening, typically at the half-open games by early farmers to be replaced:

  • Sicilian Defence ( swap black pawn c5 against white pawn d4)
  • Scottish game ( against exchange e5 d4)
  • Exchange Variation of the Ruy Lopez ( semi-open d-line for black to d7xc6 )
  • Assumed King's Gambit ( exchange e5 f4 against )
