Hamburgsund

Hamburgsund is a locality ( Tätort ) in the Swedish municipality Tanum in the historical province of Bohuslän. It is situated on both sides of the same strait which separates the island Hamburgö from the Swedish mainland. The village had about 800 inhabitants in 2010.

Etymology

The place is named after the island ( " The horn -bearing ") was formerly known as Horn Bora, which probably refers to smaller peninsulas on the west and south sides. There is no connection with the German city of Hamburg or the name origin.

History

Unconfirmed traditions tell of a Thing - place near the present-day Hamburgsund where court meetings were held in the region Viken ( Bohuslän and Norwegian areas around the Oslo fjord ). He is said to have at a defunct Castle, Charles Borg or Hornborg was called, found.

The town itself was first mentioned in 1585 as a customs station. It developed mainly to the center of freight traffic in the region. The fishermen sold their catches occur mainly in place Sjöviken on the other side of the island. His important position within the freight lost Hamburgsund only in the middle of the 20th century with the development of larger ships and land vehicles better.

Economy and infrastructure

A ferry connects the two districts at the docks most welfare institutions of the village lie. As the place Sjöviken is now atrophied to a small settlement, the fishermen of the community Hamburgsund have elected its main port.

Culture

The chapel in the village was inaugurated in 1915.

The union of the local Folkets Hus has a rich annual program.
