Hamilton Lavity Stoutt

Hamilton Lavity Stout ( born March 7, 1929 † 14 May 1995) was a three-time Chief Minister of the British Virgin Islands.

Life

Stoutt, Chairman of the Virgin Islands Party ( VIP) was in April 1967 the first Chief Minister of the British Virgin Islands and held this office until his replacement by first Willard Wheatley in June 1971.

In November 1979, he followed Wheatley then again in the office of Chief Minister, before he was replaced on 15 November 1983 by Cyril Romney, who formed a coalition of the United Party and independents.

After the electoral defeat of Romney, he followed this by 1 October 1986, becoming the third time Chief Minister of the British Virgin Islands. After nearly nine years in office he died on 14 May 1995 in office. Successor thereupon became his party colleague Ralph T. O'Neal, who was previously a minister in his cabinet.

After his death, his birthday was declared a public holiday and the annual H. Lavity Stoutt Community College in Tortola named after him.
