Hamish Fulton

Hamish Fulton ( born July 21, 1946 in London, United Kingdom, lives in Canterbury, Kent ) is a British photographer, conceptual artist, painter and sculptor. He calls himself the "Walking Artist".

Life and work

Hamish Fulton studied from 1966 to 1968 sculpture at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London, at the same time as artists like Jan Dibbet, Barry Flanagan, Gilbert and George, John Hilliard, Richard Long and Bruce McLean also were there. He continued his studies from 1968 to 1969 at the Royal College of Art in London continued.

The basis of his work are hikes that have a period of one day to several weeks. Fulton recorded his physical and emotional experiences of the landscape by shooting in black and white with a miniature camera. The documentation and the work is then a single photo or series of photos that are often usually issued in a large scale and in a rich tonal range in conjunction with printed captions. His texts describe either prosaic issues such as the length, duration, or the date of the walk or the climatic conditions. Other texts contain word sequences, to make the poetic moods understandable, so that the viewer access to the feelings, views, get reminders and meetings of the "Walking Artist" with the landscape.

Hamish Fulton sees with his conceptual art and land art in the British tradition of landscape painting with new means and forms of expression. However, he feels an obligation towards, while avant-garde artists of land art often dealt " disrespectful " with nature as an artist of nature. His work is regularly published in his books.

He participated in the Documenta 5 6 (1977 ) and the Documenta 7 in Kassel in 1972 in the Department Idea Idea / light and at the Documenta in 1982 as an artist.

Hamish Fulton has succeeded on 19 May 2009 to reach the Mount Everest. The ascent of the Himalayan mountains located in the ligand highest point on the Earth is managed by an expedition team after 49 days.
