The Royal College of Art (RCA ) is a University of Art and Design in London, with the Darwin Building at Kensington Gore, South Kensington as a main building and an additional location in the district of Battersea.

The Rector of the RCA is Paul Warwick Thompson. At the RCA about 900 students are enrolled, demonstrating the subjects visual arts, applied arts, design, entertainment and communication sciences. The university offers degrees as MA, M.Phil. and Ph.D. of.

Near the RCA are the Royal Albert Hall, the Royal College of Music Imperial College and Hyde Park.

History

The college was founded in 1837 under the name of Government School of Design. In 1853 it became the National Art Training School and in 1896 the Royal College of Art in the 19th century was due to the location, the name South Kensington School ( s ) familiar.

The Royal College of Art has played a key role in the emergence of the modern school of British sculpture in the 1920s with students like Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore, and in the development of Pop Art in the 1960s with students like Peter Blake and David Hockney.

After 130 years, the Institute was given in 1967 to the status of an independent university.
