Hank Roberts

Hank Roberts ( born March 24, 1955 in Terre Haute, Indiana, USA) is an American jazz cellist and vocalist.

Life

At the age of ten years, Roberts began playing cello. He also taught himself trombone, guitar and piano, as he wanted to be a jazz musician later. He played in various orchestras, jazz bands, rock and soul groups.

With the intention of becoming an improvising cellist and composer, Roberts visited at age 19, the Berklee School of Music in Boston, where he had studied with Gary Burton. He dealt some time just with modern jazz and began to sing in addition to his cello playing.

After graduating, Roberts moved in the 1980s to New York and found rapid connection to the avant-garde scene. Together with Mark Dresser ( bass) and Mark Feldman (violin), he founded the Arcado String Trio. In 1987, his first solo album on the JMT label ( Black Pastels ); From 1997, he released his productions on his own label Level Green Records.

Roberts was nominated twice in the Kritikerpoll the Down Beat best cello player.
