Hans Bock (chemist)

Hans Bock ( born October 5, 1928 in Hamburg, † January 21, 2008 in Königstein im Taunus ) was a German chemist and professor of inorganic chemistry at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main.

Life

Bock studied chemistry at the Ludwig- Maximilians- University of Munich, where he habilitated in 1958 at Egon Wiberg over anhydrous hydrazine doctorate and 1964 on phosphorus-containing diazenes. Then he devoted himself with Edgar Heilbronner at ETH Zurich for three years the practical applications of the HMO model, which became a standard work: The HMO model and its application led before he appointed in 1968 as professor at the Department of Inorganic Chemistry, University of Frankfurt been.

Work

The scientific work includes over 500 publications that are primarily concerned with the representation element of organic compounds and the physical measurement methods for their characterization. Of particular interest was the photoelectron spectroscopy for the detection of short-lived molecules.

Writings

  • Edgar Heilbronner and Hans Bock: The HMO model and its application. Verlag Chemie Volume 1: Fundamentals and handling
  • Volume 2: exercises with solutions
  • Volume 3: Tables of calculated and experimental variables

Awards and Honors

Bock has received numerous honors and awards. He was a foreign member of the Max Planck Society and a Visiting Professor at the University of Michigan ( Ann Arbor ) and the Technical University of Munich. He received at the Universities of Hamburg and Montpellier two honorary doctorates.

From the German Chemical Society ( German Chemical Society ), he was awarded the 1987 donated by Degussa AG Wilhelm- Klemm Prize. Since 1991 he was an elected member of the Learned Academy Leopoldina.
