Hans Christian Andersen Literature Award

The Hans Christian Andersen Literature Prize (Danish Hans Christian Andersen Litteraturpris ) is an international literary prize, awarded since 2007 every two years by a committee of the Danish city of Odense. The goal is to honor Hans Christian Andersen's influence on writers the world over, their texts with Andersen's name and life's work due to genre specific relationship or narrative device characteristics can be linked.

The literature prize is worth 500,000 Danish kroner (about 64,000 euros ). In addition to the amount of money the winners will receive the bronze sculpture The Ugly Duckling. The sculpture is a work of the sculptor ring Stine Hansen. In addition, a certificate will be awarded with the title The Beauty of the Swan.

This price is not to be confused with the Hans Christian Andersen Award, the international award for children's book authors and illustrators, which is assigned by IBBY (International Board on Books for Young People).

For all the winners and award winners a new piece of music is composed, whose premiere will take place during the award ceremony. In return, the honored guest hold a reading at the Konzerthaus and in the Town Hall of the city of Odense.

In 2010 the Hans Christian Andersen Literature Prize went to the author JK Rowling for the creation of the world-famous Harry Potter figure. On this occasion, a plaque with her name was on HC Andersen House in Odense attached. In September 2012, Isabel Allende the Hans Christian Andersen Literature Prize was awarded in Odense. Prize winners 2014 will be Salman Rushdie.
