Hans Feibusch

Hans Nathan Feibusch ( born August 15, 1898 in Frankfurt am Main, † July 18, 1998 in London ) was a German painter who lived in exile in Britain since 1933.

Life and work

Feibusch studied painting as a student of Karl Hofer at the Berlin University of the Arts. Since 1925 Feibusch lived back in Frankfurt, where he joined the Frankfurt Association of Artists and at the local Carmelite convent moved next to Rudolf Heinisch and Benno Elkan a studio. In 1931 he was awarded the Prussian State Award for the picture The fishmonger by Max Liebermann.

Only two years later, in 1933, he was expelled as a Jew from the Frankfurt Künstlerbund. Feibusch decided to emigrate to Britain, where his visa by his British wife was relieved. The Nazis Feibuschs works for were declared " degenerate art ". His painting "two floating figures" ( confiscated at the Städtische Galerie in Frankfurt am Main ) was shown at the Degenerate Art exhibition in Munich, together with works by Jankel Adler and Marc Chagall, under the heading " Revelation of the Jewish racial soul.

In Britain, where he first worked as a commercial artist, he became known for his large-scale wall paintings in churches. He received the first orders via by George Bell, Bishop of Chichester. For Chichester Cathedral Feibusch created a mural depicting the baptism of Christ.

Frescoes secular character can be found in the Civic Center of Newport ( twelve frescoes local history, 1961-1964 ) and in Portmeirion, was attached to the Feibusch, since 1925 he had been awarded the contract to a bust of Bertram Clough Williams -Ellis.
