Hans Joachim Störig

Hans Joachim Störig ( born July 25, 1915 in Quenstedt; † 10 September 2012 in Munich) was a German non-fiction author and lexicographer.

Life

Störig studied history, philosophy, sociology and law in Freiburg, Cologne, Königsberg, Basel, Hamburg and Berlin and earned his PhD. and Dr. jur. An academic career was denied to him in the time of National Socialism for political reasons. After 1945 he worked as a publisher, author, editor and translator. He was from 1956 to 1963 director of the publishing house Cotta and then to 1983 the publisher lexicographic Institute in Munich. From 1990 he taught as an honorary professor for " German as a Foreign Language " at the Ludwig- Maximilians- University of Munich.

Störig was, among other things known for his lexicographical works, such as " The Great Störig. Knaurs great dictionary of the German language. " His most famous book was the first time in 1950 published "The Small World History of Philosophy ", which reached a total circulation of nearly 1 million copies over the years. The work has been revised and expanded several times ( most recently in 1999 ) and translated into six languages.
