Hans Kiewning

Hans Johann Karl Kiewning ( born August 20, 1864 in Königsberg ( Prussia); † July 13, 1939 in Bad Reichenhall ) was a German archive and library director, historian, writer and painter.

Life

His parents were the merchant Hermann Kiewning and Therese née Rousseau. Kiewning visited the Old Town School of Königsberg and studied at the University of Königsberg philology, where in 1889 the Dr. phil. doctorate. From 1 October 1891 to 31 December 1894 he was a member of the Prussian Historical Institute at the Vatican in Rome. This was followed from 1895 to 1899 an activity in the state archives of Berlin, Poznan and Königsberg. On February 1, 1899 Kiewning received a calling by Count Regent Ernst zur Lippe - Biesterfeld as on Archives to Detmold as head of the Princely House and land archive. 1905 he was appointed to the Privy Council on Archives. Between 1917-1933 Kiewning was director of the State Archives in Lippe Detmold. In the years 1919-1924 he worked as a lecturer at the School of Political and Economic Sciences in Detmold. From 1924 to 1933 he was Regional Library Director at the Lippe library.

Kiewning was a member of the Historical Commission for Westphalia and Chairman of the Detmold Education Association. He also was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Hermann Monument Foundation and founder of the journal "Communications of the lip between history and geography ."

Hans Kiewning was married to Marie born Süpply. They had the sons Bernhard (1900-1918) and Hans Georg ( 1903-1933 ).
