Hans Moravec

Hans Peter Moravec ( born November 30, 1948 in Kautzen, Austria ) is an Austrian- Canadian scientists in the field of robotics at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States.

Life

Moravec is since the 1970s pioneer in robotic development, with publications on artificial intelligence, for transhumanism and futurology.

Moravec earned his doctorate in 1980 at the Stanford University Doctor of Philosophy by developing a remote-controlled, equipped with a television camera robot was controlled by a computer.

In 2003 he co-founded the SEEGRID Corporation, a robot company that has set the development of autonomous robots to the goal.

Publications

His popular science books in German language are:

  • Mind Children. The race between human and artificial intelligence. - Hoffmann und Campe, Hamburg 2001 (English 1988) ISBN 3-4550-8373-0 - This is where the development of the robot to an intelligent species - also with reference to the ideas of Isaac Asimov - predicted on the basis of Moore's Law for 2030-2040.
  • Computer to take power, Hoffmann and Campe, 1999 (English 1998) ISBN 3- 4550-8575 -X - About developments in robotics and their implications.

His technological vision Moravec describes in this book as follows:

"I see these machines as our descendants. At the moment you can hardly believe that, precisely because they are just as intelligent as insects. But with time we will realize the great potential that lies within them. And we will have our new robot children like, because they will be more agreeable than humans. You do not have to install all of the negative human characteristics, which have existed since the Stone Age, in these machines, yes. At the time these properties for humans were important. Aggression as he needed to survive. Today, in our great civilized societies make these instincts no longer makes sense. These things you just can omit - as well as the trait of the people that they want to save their lives at the expense of others. One robot is not all that. He is a pure creature of our culture and its success depends on how this culture evolved. He will therefore integrate much better than many people do. So we will like them and we identify with them. We will assume it as a child -. Than children who are not influenced by our genes, but we have built with our hands and with our mind "

Trivia

In Dan Simmons sci-fi novels Illium and Olympos are called autonomous mechanical- biological beings Moravec.
