Hans Münch (conductor)

Hans Münch ( born March 9, 1893 in Mulhouse ( Alsace ); † September 7, 1983 in Binningen ) was a Swiss conductor.

Life

Hans Münch was born on March 9, 1893, the son of Eugen Münch and Margaret Caroline Wilhelmine, née Beck head in Mulhouse to the world. His father's brother was Ernst Münch, organist and choirmaster from Alsace. Thus his son, the conductor Charles Münch, Hans Münch was cousin.

Münch studied from 1912 at the Basel Conservatory piano, organ, cello and composition. Six years later he became a teacher himself at the Conservatory where she taught piano and choral singing. In 1921, he married Valerie Hausmann.

From 1935 to 1947 Hans Münch took over the post of Director of the Conservatory and Music School. As the successor Hermann Suter's he was conductor of the Basel Choral Society and the Basel Liedertafel. In 1935 he took over from Felix Weingartner directing the concerts of the Music Society, in 1939 he was Dr. hc the University of Basel. Besides his work as a conductor Hans Münch composed some pieces, especially large choral and orchestral works.
