Hans Paul Bernhard Gierke

Hans Paul Bernhard Gierke ( born August 19, 1847 in Stettin, † 8 May 1886 in Schöneberg in Berlin) was a German anatomist.

He attended schools in Bydgoszcz and Szczecin. Then he studied natural sciences and medicine in Berlin, Vienna, Leipzig, Wurzburg, Breslau and Munich. Gierke received his doctorate in 1872 in Würzburg and went on to Breslau, where he worked in the Institute of Physiology. Since 1874 in Würzburg, he was prosector for comparative anatomy and histology of Albert Kölliker of. In 1876 he went on the recommendation of Kolliker to Japan, as a professor of anatomy at the Tokyo Imperial University. But in 1881 he returned for health reasons to Germany. In October 1881 Gierke took on an assistant at the Physiological Institute of the University of Breslau and was promoted in 1882 to Professor extraordinary. He died on 8 May 1886 in a mental hospital in Schöneberg in Berlin.
