Hans Peter Jørgen Julius Thomsen

Hans Peter Jørgen Julius Thomsen ( born February 16, 1826 in Copenhagen, † February 13, 1909 ) was a Danish chemist.

Life

Thomsen was 1866-1891 Professor of Chemistry at the University of Copenhagen, where he served twice as rector. From 1883 to 1902 he was also director of the Polytekniske Læreanstalt, the predecessor of Technical University of Denmark.

He worked mainly on thermochemistry.

Honors

Thomsen was a member of numerous academies and learned societies. From 1888 to 1909 he was president of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences. Uppsala University honored him in 1877 with an honorary doctorate. 1883 Davy Medal in 1896 and the Grand Cross of Dannebrogordens he was awarded. The mineral Thomsenolith was named after him.
