Hans Reist

Hans Reist (* before 1644; † after 1697 ) was a Swiss preacher of the Swiss Anabaptist movement, also called Swiss Brethren.

Life

Hans Reist probably came from the area around Sumiswald in the Emmental ( canton of Bern ). About the origin and birthplace of Hans Reist, there are no reliable data.

Hans Reist was appointed elders of the Swiss brothers who were vertren at that time very numerous in the Emmental. A gifted preacher, he had great influence on his the Baptist churches in Switzerland, Alsace and Southern Germany. Importance who became known as the leader of the opposite party Jakob Ammann. This convened in July / August 1693 a meeting of all the elders of the Swiss Anabaptists, to explain his beliefs. Hans Reist not visited despite repeated requests these meetings, but put in writing out the reasons why he rejected the views of Jakob Ammann. The Swiss Brethren and her siblings were split by spell in the Amish ( Häftler ) and that the rice tables ( Knöpfler ). He succeeded Hans Reist, to convince a majority of the Baptist in the region from his point of view. These formed the nucleus of today's conference in Switzerland ( Alttäufer ) and numerous conservative groups of Mennonites in North America, the Mennonites.

The date of death and place of death of Hans Reist are unknown. Despite its great importance for the Mennonite Hans Reist is now outside of the Mennonite church fellowships almost forgotten as it left no theological writings.
