Jakob Ammann

Jakob Ammann (* February 12, 1644 () in Erlenbach im Simmental; ? † before 1730 probably in cell Willer, Alsace ) was a Swiss Mennonite preacher, and probably a tailor, like his father.

About 1655 he moved with his parents to Oberhofen, in 1680 he converted to Anabaptism and later became an elder of a Baptist church. Soon after 1680, he had probably fled to Alsace, lived from 1693 to 1695 in Heidolsheim, 1695-1712 at Markirch ( Sainte -Marie -aux -Mines ), is likely to death in cell Willer.

In the summer of 1693 he traveled to a number of communities in the Swiss Emmental taufwilliger. From it the Amish or Amish Mennonite derive, after he brought about by his brusque attitude to church discipline in 1694 a division of the Mennonites.
