Hans Vredeman de Vries

Hans Vredeman de Vries (* 1527 in Leeuwarden, † 1609 presumably in Antwerp ) was a Dutch Renaissance painters, theoreticians and (garden ) Architect.

Life

He began his training as a painter in Amsterdam and studied in Kampen and Mechelen later. In Mechelen de Vries supported the development of the triumphal arches for the so-called "merry entry" of Charles V and Philip II. , He studied the works of Vitruvius and Serlio in the translation of Pieter Coecke van Aelst. The theory of perspective in these works was de Vries fascinating and he became the perspectives and architectural painter par excellence. De Vries introduced the Italian style and his typical ornaments north one of the Alps.

He continued his career in Antwerp, where he was city architect and expert on fortifications. After Antwerp had been conquered in 1585 by Alessandro Farnese, he continued his work in Wolfenbüttel, where he put a canal system on behalf of Duke Julius of Brunswick- Wolfenbüttel. Further stations were Hamburg and Danzig ( 1592). In Prague ( 1596), he designed the local art gallery. In 1601 he returned to the Netherlands, where he probably remained until his death. His son Paul lived in Hamburg.

Like no other artist contributed his graphic pattern designs for the spread of the Renaissance ornaments in architecture and the applied arts at. For the purposes of central perspective in the Dutch painting his work is of outstanding importance. With Hendrik Hondius 1604-05 he published a textbook of perspective.
