Harald Rosenthal

Harald Rosenthal ( born June 9, 1937 in Berlin ) is a German marine biologist and fisheries scientist.

Life

Rosenthal was born in Berlin and grew up there. He studied from 1957 to 1962 at the Free University of Berlin, zoology, botany, chemistry, geography and philosophy. 1963 to 1968 he studied in Hamburg Hydrobiology and Fisheries Science.

He received his doctorate in 1969 with a thesis on the mass entertainment of herring larvae and habilitated in 1981 on closed circuit systems in fish farming and research. He taught from 1989 to 2002 at the Institute of Oceanography of the University of Kiel.

Rosenthal's research concentrated on two areas:

In addition to his own research Rosenthal is active in international cooperation in the Hydrobiology and Aquaculture, in particular between Germany and Canada as well as Germany and Israel.

Rosenthal is editor of the Journal of Applied Ichtyology and co-founder and president of the World Sturgeon Conservation Society ( WSCS ). He holds honorary doctorates from the universities of Edinburgh ( 1985), Moncton (1996) and Stettin (2003) and member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
