Haris Silajdžić

Haris Silajdžić ( born October 1, 1945 in Breza, Bosnia and Herzegovina) is a Bosnian politician, former member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the former Prime Minister.

Silajdžić studied at the University of Pristina history and political science, as well as at the Garyounis University in Benghazi (Libya), the subjects Arabic and Islamic Studies. After receiving his doctorate in 1980 ( on the Albanian- American relations before the Second World War), he was a lecturer of Arabic at the University of Pristina, then a professor of history at the University of Sarajevo and guest lecturer at several American universities.

In 1990 he was appointed by Alija Izetbegovic in the electoral team of the Party of Democratic Action (SDA ), and was vice-chairman of the party.

As Foreign Minister, he was elected in November and December 1990 after the first multi-party elections in Bosnia and Herzegovina, from which the SDA emerged as the winner. In October 1993, he was appointed Prime Minister and handed over by the new government required according to the Dayton Agreement in 1996, the Office of Hasan Muratović.

After intra-party clashes in the SDA Silajdžić joined in April 1996 from the party and founded the Party for Bosnia - Herzegovina ( SBiH ), whose chairmanship he also took. In the same year he applied unsuccessfully for a seat in the state presidency, but was appointed by this body together with the Serbs Bošić Boro, who was replaced in May 1999 by his compatriot Svetozar Mihajlovic as Chairman of the Joint Council of Ministers.

In the elections in October 2006 Haris Silajdžić was elected with 62.8 % of the votes for the Bosniak Bosniak representatives in the three-member state presidency. In the elections in October 2010, he finished with 25 % to third place. His successor in the State Presidency Bakir Izetbegovic was.

Haris Silajdžić is married and has a son who lives in Istanbul and studied.
