Harris J. Ryan

Harris Joseph Ryan ( born January 8, 1866 in Matamoras, Pike County ( Pennsylvania), † July 3, 1934 ) was an American high-voltage technician.

From 1883 to 1887, he studied engineering at Cornell University in Ithaca in William Arnold Anthony. A visit to the factory of Frank Julian Sprague had awakened his interest in high-voltage transmission.

After working for one year at Western Engineering Company in Nebraska, he taught at Cornell. He led the procured from Germany cathode ray tube in the USA as a research tool. She was there for a while as Ryan Braun tube known.

In 1905 he moved to Stanford University, where he studied high-voltage phenomena. He developed an improved insulation tester and dealt with insulators.

In 1920 he was inducted into the National Academy of Sciences. 1923/24, he was president of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers ( AIEE ). In 1925 he received the Edison Medal.
