Refugee camp

In Hartisheik was a refugee camp. This was set up in 1988 for Somali refugees who fled northern Somalia in the fighting between the Somali government under Siad Barre and the SNM rebels. With approximately 250,000 refugees - mainly from the regions of Hargeysa and Gabiley - it was temporarily the largest refugee camp in the world.

In July 2004, the camp was officially closed, as now in northern Somalia - and since 1991, the de facto independent Somaliland - peace reigns supreme and most Somalis have returned there since 1997. However, up to 6,000 Ethiopian IDPs remained in Hartisheik. 2005 reported UNICEF and other organizations of high malnutrition rates in these displaced persons.
