Harwood Hole

The Harwood Hole (also Harwood 's Hole ) is a cave system in the northwest of the South Island of New Zealand. It is one of several major cave systems in Takaka Hill between Golden Bay and Tasman Bay. There was for the film The Hobbit - An Unexpected Journey rotated.

In Harwood Hole is New Zealand's deepest vertical cave shaft. It begins at the surface as a 50 m, round entrance and reaches 183 m depth to later meet up with the Starlight Cave, in which a further output is made. The descent on the rope and is due to the depth of something extraordinary. The depth of the cave is 357 m.

Henry Harwood (1844-1927) opened up with John Horton and Thomas Manson the territory of Canaan Downs and discovered Harwood's Hole. The cave was not until 1958, first celebrated by cavers. After further investigation, 1959, the cave was the deepest explored cave in New Zealand, a record of many years was subject.
