Takaka Hill

Takaka Hill is a mountain area in the northwest of the South Island of New Zealand. The existing marble mountain is weathered into many bizarre shapes and is a typical karst area, with their typical sinkholes.

The only leading over the mountain road winds along the valley of the Takaka River to the northwest and along the valley of the Riwaka River to the southeast across the slope.

The mountain reaches a height of 760 m. He isolated the coastal communities of Golden Bay from the more populous Tasman Bay in the Southeast and the rest of the South Island.

Takaka Hill is known for its marble mining and numerous caves, including

  • Publicly available Ngarua Cave, in which deposits of moa bones are to be seen
  • Harwood Hole, for a while at 357 m, the deepest cave in New Zealand, now in 13th place of the ranking of the deepest caves in New Zealand
  • Legless at number 12 of the longest caves with 362 m
  • Perseverance Cave 315 m deep ( 17th)
  • Ed 's Cellar, 259 m ( No. 22 )
  • Canaan Downs Cave, 245 m ( No. 23 )
  • Summit Tomo 243 m ( No. 26 )
  • The Green Link system in Takaka Hill covered with 5228 m the number 14 in the longest caves in New Zealand.

The Takaka Hill was - like many other areas in and around the Golden Bay - used for filming the trilogy The Lord of the Rings.
