Hassan Gouled Aptidon

Hassan Gouled Aptidon (* October 15, 1916 in Garissa, Lughaya, British Somaliland, † 21 November 2006) was from 1977 to 1999 the first President of Djibouti and from May to July 1977 applicable to short time and Prime Minister.

Aptidon belonged to the ethnic group of the Issa - Somali. He gained power as president of the African People's League for the Independence ( Ligue Populaire Africaine pour l' Independence, LPAI). Two years after the independence of Djibouti in 1979 he dissolved the LPAI himself and founded the Rassemblement Populaire pour le Progres (People's Rally for Progress, RPP ). In 1981, he made ​​Djibouti party state by declaring the RPP as the only legal party.

After the outbreak of the Djiboutian civil war in 1991, he allowed the following year, partially free elections, in which a maximum of four parties were permitted, not including the person responsible for the war rebel group Front pour la Restauration de l' Unité et de la Démocratie ( Front for the Restoration of unity and Democracy, FRUD ). The RPP won 72 percent of the vote and Aptidon was thus re-elected for a fourth term.

1999, at the age of 83, he decided to resign after he was re- elected in 1997 for a fifth term of office. His successor was the Chief of Cabinet Ismail Omar Guelleh. Aptidon died in late 2006 from the effects of long-term liver disease.
