Havøysund [ havœʏsʉn ] ( German translation: "Close to the sea island ") is the administrative center of the municipality Måsøy and is located in Northern Norway in the north- west of the administrative district (county ) Finnmark.

Facts and Figures

The village lies on the island Havøya ( " Sea Island" ) almost exactly on the 71 degree north latitude. It was first mentioned in 1668 ( in a control list) and counted in the 18th century only one between three and seven households. Today Havøysund has about 1200 inhabitants.

The main economic source of income has always been fishing, which has gained national importance, especially since the Second World War.

Traffic

Havøysund is run daily from the ships of the Hurtigruten. Since 1988 Havøysund is connected by bridge to the mainland.

Attractions

  • Near the village is the northernmost wind farm in the world, consisting of 16 wind turbines with a total capacity of 40 MW.
  • Nearby is one of the largest seabird colonies in Northern Norway, the Hjelmsøystauren
  • Near the northernmost birch forest is supposedly the world.
