Parish

Hayes is a small town in the south of Jamaica. The city is located in Middlesex County in the Parish Clarendon. In 2010, Hayes had a population of 9,839 people. The city is situated on the east bank of the Rio Minho.

History

Hayes was founded by in 1835 by former slaves as so-called Free Village (Free village). After slavery was on August 1, 1834 throughout the British Empire abolished sprung up, all in the interior of Jamaica, many such villages. In general, large tracts of land were acquired by missionaries of various churches to divide these into small plots. These were then sold to members in order to consolidate the respective community.

In August 2007, Hurricane Dean significant damage taught at in the city. The building of the local elementary school was completely destroyed.

Economy

In Hayes is the Jamalco - Bauxite plant, the largest bauxite producer of Jamaica. Since early 2011, there are massive protests of local residents, as the plant poisoned according to statements of the residents of Hayes, the adjacent lakes. The Board denied this before.
