History

The Edinburgh Haymarket Rail Station is located on the western edge of downtown. It was first built in 1842 as a terminus station and terminus of the line from Glasgow, now a branch of the West Coast Main Line. 1846 Haymarket tunnel was opened that created the connection to the Waverley Station and Edinburgh Haymarket train station made a through station. The station is now in the category A of the Statutory List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest under monument protection.

2006 head platform the passenger lifts, in addition to the two continuous center platforms still built with an entrance from the west, in 2010 expanded to provide the platforms with disabled access. Is operated by First ScotRail train station.

Plant

The station has five platform tracks. The track 0 is the subsequently added head track. The numbering of the platform track with "0" is a great rarity. The tracks 1 and 2 were - in contrast to the tracks 3 and 4 - not electrified, so a flexible approach to the track occupancy was almost impossible. Since early 2011, the remaining three tracks are placed under tension. The system is mostly used in the following way:

  • Track 0: For ending trains, especially during construction work in the Waverley Train Station
  • Track 1: trains via Forth Railway Bridge from Inverness and Aberdeen
  • Track 2: trains via Forth Railway Bridge to Inverness and Aberdeen
  • Track 3: Trains from Glasgow Central / Glasgow Queen Street and the West Coast Main Line
  • Track 4: trains to Glasgow Central / Glasgow Queen Street and the West Coast Main Line

Traffic

On the five tracks of the station keep long-distance trains of various relations, on the one hand the trains to and from Glasgow, both those from / to Glasgow Queen Street via Falkirk, some features of the East Coast Main Line, and trains to and from Glasgow Central. On the other hand, the station also trains the West Coast Main Line to and from the south of Scotland and England and London is reached. Most long-distance trains, which depart from Edinburgh Waverley stop just at the boarding gate in the opposite direction to set down only. In addition, regional trains, among others, to Glasgow or Fife Cirle Line hold.

The station is served by the railway company First ScotRail, East Coast, Virgin Trains, First TransPennine Express and Cross Country.
