Hedwig of Saxony

Hadwig of Saxony, Duchess of Franzien (* 914-920; † 959 ) was a daughter of the East Frankish King Henry I and his second wife, Mathilde, sister of Emperor Otto I and the mother of Hugh Capet, the founder of the Capetian.

Hadwig was younger than her brother Otto ( * 912) and her sister Gerberga, but older than her brother Heinrich ( * 921 ). 937 or 938, it was with Hugh the Great, Duke of Franzien married. Her son Hugh Capet, who was 987 French king, came to 940 to the world. Other sons are Odo ( 956-965 Duke of Burgundy ) and Odo - Henry ( 965-1001 Duke of Burgundy ).

On the death of Hugh the Great, 956 her son Hugh Capet was still a minor, so took her brother Brun guardianship. Brun had been 954 the guardianship of his nephew Lothar, his sister's son Gerberga taken, and thus got a very influential position in France.
