HEGRA

High Energy Gamma Ray Astronomy ( HEGRA ) was an experiment for the detection of high energy gamma rays from astronomical objects.

HEGRA from 1987 to 2002 2200m altitude at the Roque- de-los Muchachos Observatory on the Canary island of La Palma in operation. With different types of detectors for the detection of the secondary particles in air showers generated by them and the HEGRA Cherenkov radiation was in the range 0.5-10000 TeV sensitive. It succeeded in proving highly energetic gamma rays of various celestial objects such as supernova remnants and active galactic nuclei.

HEGRA was a collaboration of institutes in Germany, Spain and Armenia. Follow-up experiments are High Energy Stereoscopic System and MAGIC.
