Heiner Zieschang

Heiner Zieschang ( born November 12, 1936 in Kiel, † April 5, 2004 in Bochum, Germany ) was a German mathematician who dealt in particular with knot theory.

Life

Zieschang studied from 1956 to 1961 in Hamburg and Göttingen. In 1961 he was at the University of Göttingen with Kurt Reidemeister PhD ( via simple curves on full pretzels ). He headed the Department of topology at the Ruhr- University Bochum from 1968 until his retirement in 2002. He was the youngest professor of Germany and one of the founding fathers of the Faculty of Mathematics in Bochum. Zieschang scientific work includes work on low-dimensional topology, to knot theory and combinatorial group theory. For his services he received in 1996 an honorary doctorate from the University of Toulouse 3 and 1997 the title of honorary professor of Moscow State University. He was next involved in the establishment and work of the Russian - German Institute of Science and Culture at the University of Moscow.

Zieschang was a member of the collective author of Boto Querenburg under whose name the standard work " set topology " was released.

Trivia

Heiner Zieschang was the doctor father of basketball and chess player Ruzena Heinen.
