Heino Eller

Heino Eller ( born March 7, 1887 in Tartu, † June 16, 1970 in Tallinn) was an Estonian composer and music educator.

Early years

Heino Eller joined the school in 1907 in Tartu. Since early youth he took private violin lessons and played in numerous groups and orchestras. 1907/ 08 he studied at the Conservatory in St. Petersburg violin, and later from 1913 to 1915 and 1919/20, composition and music theory. From 1908 to 1911 he was enrolled as a law student. During World War II, he fought as a soldier in the Russian army.

Music teacher

From 1920 to 1940 taught Eller composition and music theory at the Higher Music School in Tartu (Tartu Kõrgem Muusikakool ). During his time as a university teacher in Tartu, he coined the so-called " Tartu school of composition ." She prepared many high-ranking Estonian composer Eduard Tubin like the way. It formed the counterpart to so-called " Tallinn School", which was heavily influenced by Artur Kapp.

From 1940 until his death in 1970 was Heino Eller lecturer at the State Conservatory of Tallinn ( Tallinna Riiklik Konservatoorium ), today's Estonian Music and Theatre Academy.

Composer

Heino Eller is described as a gifted music teacher and brilliant composer. His focus was on the instrumental music. He is considered a founder of Estonian symphonic and chamber music. Above all, his symphonic works achieved international fame. His sound is described as " Nordic " and " fresh".

Heino Eller was a tonal artist. In his work he processed Estonian traditional elements and folk tunes, but was also inspired by Impressionism, Expressionism and other musical movements of the 20th century. In addition, it influenced particularly Frédéric Chopin, Edvard Grieg and Jean Sibelius, which he experienced as a young man himself.

Special attention was paid to the early works Koit (1917 ) and Videvik (1918 ), besides also Neenia (1928 ), the Elegy for Harp and Strings ( 1931), the Lyric Suite (1945 ) and the Five Pieces for String Orchestra ( 1953). His oeuvre includes three symphonies, several symphonic pieces, a violin concerto, five string quartets, four piano sonatas, two violin sonatas and more than 200 smaller pieces, mainly for piano (the best known are " Kellad ", " Liblikas " and " 13 klaveripala eesti motiividel " ).

Awards

1948 and 1965 Heino Eller became the State Prize of the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic awarded in 1965 and 1970, the Order of Lenin. 1953 Eller was awarded " Honored Artist of the Estonian SSR " and 1967 People's Artist of USSR ( Народный артист СССР ).

In 1971, the Higher School of Music Tartu was named after Heino Eller. A body set up by the Estonian sculptor Aime Kuulbusch memorial plaque is located in Tallinn.

Heino Eller Music Prize -

1998 founded the Estonian Theatre and Music Museum named after a Heino Eller Music Prize, which is awarded annually on the birthday of the artist. It honors young Estonian composer or performer of the music of Heino Eller. The award is endowed with 15,000 Estonian crowns.

Private life

Heino Eller was married to the pianist Anna Kremer, who came in a Nazi concentration camp in 1942 lost their lives.
