Eduard Tubin

Eduard Tubin (born 5 Junijul / June 18 1905greg in Torila, now the town Alatskivi at Kallaste, Estonia, .. † November 17, 1982 in Stockholm) was an Estonian composer, who lived in Sweden since 1944.

Life and Music

Growing up in rural surroundings, he taught himself various instruments such as flute, balalaika, violin and piano. After completing his training as a teacher, he attended from 1924 the Music School in Tartu, where he received training in composition with Heino Eller. Later he worked as a conductor and conductor. His first compositions followed, in which mainly influences national folk tunes are recognizable. In his subsequent symphonic poems he follows the compositional ideas of Jean Sibelius, Anton Bruckner, and Carl Nielsen.

On September 20, 1944 Tubin fled before the advancing Red Army on board the sailing ship " Triina " to Sweden. After two days of travel, he found his wife Heather and their two sons, first recording in a Stockholm refugee camp. After the war he remained in Sweden and settled in a Stockholm suburb. He worked among other things as a choral conductor and musical arranger at the theater in Drottningholm. As a composer, he should be here for the time being, however, can not make a name. In 1961 he acquired Swedish citizenship. Due to state funding from 1966 he was again able to turn entirely to composition. He died in 1982 from cancer.

His compositions include among other things, ten symphonies ( an eleventh symphony remained unfinished), instrumental works, Apartments, elegies and sonatas, and choral works, ballets and operas. His works have long been banned in the Soviet-dominated Estonia. He was considered the most important Symphony Orchestra in Estonia.

Although he initially was denied in his exile Sweden recognizing him later the Culture Prize of the City of Stockholm was awarded; shortly afterwards he was appointed a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music. - The Estonian conductor Neeme Järvi conducted in the 1980s a Tubin - Renaissance, but in 1963 after Tubins 6th Symphony with the Rundfunk- Sinfonie-Orchester Estonia published under Järvi led by the Soviet company Melodiya ( 33D - 11609-610 ) had been.
