Hekatonkheires

The Hekatonchires (Greek ἑκατόγχειρες hekatoncheires " Hundertarmige " from ἑκατόν Hecaton "hundred" and χεῖρ cheir "hand"; Latin CentiMani ) are figures of Greek mythology, three giant sons of Uranus and Gaia. Each of them has 50 heads and 100 hands. Their names are Briareos ( Βριάρεως, also Obriareos ) Gyges ( Γύγης, also Gyes ) and Kottos ( Κοττος ). Major source of the myth is the Theogony of Hesiod. The name Hekatonchires emerged relatively late on in the Libraries of Apollodorus and Hyginus Mythographus.

My father Uranus hated the Hekatonchires from the beginning and hid them immediately after their birth in a dark place in the earth where the sunlight never penetrated. Her mother suffered from the unjust fate of the children and donated their other children from the titanium frames bad to castrate her father with a sickle of flint, with the Titans but was only Kronos ready for this fact.

The Hekatonchires but were freed only by Zeus, son of Kronos from prison under the ground at the edge of the world. Zeus and his siblings fought namely, for 10 years a not decisive war against the other Titans (see Titanomachy ). Gaia however, had prophesied that with the help of Zeus Hekatonchires could achieve victory. So Zeus freed the Hekatonchires from the Erebus, gave them to drink nectar and ambrosia to eat, which the Giants their giant forces applied after long captivity back to full development and strengthened in the fight against the enemies of Zeus attracted. Under the Attack of the Hundred- the Titans broke together: Briareos, and Gyges Kottos piled on each other 300 rocks and buried the Titans underneath. The vanquished were bound and banished to Tartarus, the Hekatonchires but were ordered to their guards. Briareos also received from the hand of his daughter Kymopolea Poseidon, who bore him the nymph Oiolyke.

Briareos is also identified with Aigaion ( Αἰγαίων ), as in Vergil and Ovid in the Fasti. In Homer Aigaion appears as the father of Briareos, who would only called by the gods so that people not call him Aigaion because he rage the father of strength. He was so powerful that even the gods were afraid to oppose him: Once, Hera, Poseidon and Athena had conspired to overwhelm and captivate Zeus, Thetis called the Briareos to Mount Olympus, who sat next to Zeus:
