Helen of the Palatinate

Helene von der Pfalz ( born February 9, 1493 Heidelberg; † August 4, 1524 in Schwerin ) from the family of Wittelsbach was a Countess Palatine of simmering and by marriage Duchess of Mecklenburg.

Life

Helen was a daughter of the Elector Philipp of the Palatinate (1448-1508) from his marriage to Margaret (1456-1501), daughter of Duke Louis IX. of Bavaria- Landshut.

They married on June 15, 1513 in Wismar Duke Henry V of Mecklenburg ( 1479-1552 ). In order not to make the bride in the shadows, woman Fineke of Greese had to be instructed not to put their best dress. The nuptials was attended by numerous princes, held in a hitherto unknown pageantry.

Helene was buried in Schwerin Cathedral. Your funeral there was the first in the Mecklenburg royal family, which previously used the Doberan Abbey Church as grave lay. My epitaph, created by Peter Vischer, erected shortly after her death and fixed until 1845 on the back wall of the altar wall, is located on a pillar on the southern approach to the church door.

Progeny

From their marriage, Helen had the following children:

  • Philipp (1514-1557), Duke of Mecklenburg
  • Margaret (1515-1559)
  • Catherine (1518-1581)
