Henry V, Duke of Mecklenburg

Henry V, Duke of Mecklenburg, the peaceable, (* May 3, 1479; † February 6, 1552 ) was reigning Duke of Mecklenburg in the country part of Mecklenburg- Schwerin and son of Duke Magnus II and Sophia of Pomerania.

Life

Henry reigned jointly with his brothers Erich and Albert and his uncle Balthasar since 27 December 1503. Latter died on 16 March 1507 and Erich on December 22, 1508, both without an heir, so Henry and Albrecht in the possession of the whole country came. These first ruled jointly, although Albrecht repeatedly advocated a division of the state, it was sealed in Neubrandenburg house contract on May 7, 1520. It was determined that Henry Schwerin and Albrecht ruled in Güstrow without a de facto partition of the country was.

In the time of her reign the Reformation of Luther, who quickly found supporters in Mecklenburg, so here earlier publicly the Protestant doctrine was preached more or less since 1523 and fell. Duke Henry favored the new doctrine from the very beginning, first in a very cautious manner, after the Diet of Augsburg but open. Since 1524 he was in correspondence with Luther, who sent him a teacher and preacher.

Also Torgau covenant he was joined on 12 June 1526 and in 1532 he finally confessed publicly as a supporter of Luther. Of course, his standpoint it initially led them to give the new doctrine a fixed external and internal organization; so he left in 1537 to draft of the recommended to him by Luther Johann Riebling, whom he appointed superintendent, a church order, a catechism and liturgy. This organization of the church took its next government years exclusively to complete.

On religious war, which broke out after Luther's death in Germany, Henry did not take part and also did not participate in the Smalcald League of Protestant princes. However, he opposed the introduction of the 1548 interim adopted by the Emperor and approved the decision of the Mecklenburg stands from July 1549 through which the Lutheran doctrine was formally recognized. Soon after, on February 6, 1552, he died with the glory of a pious and peaceable prince.

Heinrich was married three times.

First, since 12 December 1505 Ursula ( October 17, 1488 - September 18, 1510 ), daughter of the Elector Johann of Brandenburg.

He closed his second marriage on 12 June 1513 Helene ( 1493 - August 4, 1524 ), daughter of the Elector Philipp of the Palatinate.
