Helena is a city in Shelby County, founded in 1877 and partly in Jefferson County of the U.S. state of Alabama. It has about 12,300 inhabitants ( 2004) on an area of 44.3 km ².
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 44.3 km ², of which 44.2 km ² of land and 0.1 km ² omitted ( = 0.12 %) to water. The Cahaba River and its tributary Buck Creek flows through the city. The Buck Creek is dammed above the Alabama State Route 261 and thus forms in the Old Town Lake Davidson, who served for the turn of the century to the 20th century to drive a mill wheel, but fulfills today only recreational purposes. On both rivers, fishing and canoeing is a popular pastime.
Helena is located at the foot of the southernmost foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, where they descend to the coastal plain of the Gulf of Mexico. The area consists of an undulating hills with numerous small streams and is covered by mixed forest.
Demography
At the time of the census of 2000, there were 10,296 persons Helena. The population density was 232.9 people per km ². There were 3983 housing units at an average 90.1 per km ². The population consisted of Hoquiams 93.25 % White, 5.00 % African American, 0.20 % Native American, 0.65 % Asian, 0.02 % Pacific Islander, 0.35 % reported other races to belong and 0.52 % from two or more races. 1.00 % of the population to be Hispanic or Latino of any race.
The residents of Helena distributed to 3828 households out of which 43.4% were living in children under 18 years. 70.2 % married couples living together, 7.4 % had a female householder with no husband present, and 20.5 % were non-families. 17.7% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 3.0 % of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.69 and the average family size is 3.06.
The city population was spread out with 28.7 % under the, 6.0 % 18 -24- year-old, 42.7 % 25-44 year olds, 17.5% of 45-64 year olds and 5.1 % under the age of 65 years or more. The average age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 90.9 males. In the over -18s accounted for 100 women 88.6 males.
The median household income in Helena was 62 908 U.S. dollars, and the median family income reached the height of 66,250 U.S. dollars. The average income of men was 45 291 U.S. dollars, compared to 32 431 U.S. dollars for women.
