Helgi Grétarsson

Helgi Dagbjartur Áss Grétarsson ( born February 18, 1977) is an Icelandic chess player.

Grétarsson was awarded in 1994 in the Brazilian world champion Matinhos the under-20s and afterwards went to the World Chess Federation FIDE Grand Master title. In the FIDE World Chess Championship in Groningen, which was first held in Knock- Out mode 1997 Grétarsson failed after an opening victory against the Spaniard Miguel Illescas Cordoba, in the second round by Artur Yusupov.

In the years 2002 and 2004 was Grétarsson second in the Icelandic national championships, he had to each Hannes Stefansson bend, he lost this last just for a playoff over four games ( 0, -1, = 3). For the Icelandic national Grétarsson played on all three Chess Olympiads in 1994 and 1998 and so far last time in 2002 in Bled, on the second board behind Stefánsson. In the British Four Nations Chess League Helgi Áss Grétarsson played in the 1999/2000 season at White Rose, in the same season he played in the Swedish Elitserien at Lunds ASK.

His current Elo rating is 2455 (as of March 2014), his all-time highest rating of 2563 reached Grétarsson in July 2000.

Grétarsson was married to the native Czech Lenka Ptacnikova, a woman grandmaster who repeatedly won the Icelandic Women's Championship. Together, they won in the " family Championship " of the ZMD Opens in Dresden in 2002.
