Helicobacter

Helicobacter pylori

Helicobacter is a genus of bacteria of the family of Helicobacteraceae. The cells are spiral -shaped with a diameter of 0.2 to 1.2 X 1.5 to 10.0 micrometers. The flagella are arranged in tufts polar. It is microaerobic bacteria, they need environments with low oxygen content. The genus is one of the Epsilonproteobacteria, the Gram test falls, typically, negative as for proteobacteria from. The genome of the species Helicobacter pylori is completely sequenced.

Pathogen

Helicobacter is divided into gastric (eg, Helicobacter pylori) and enterohepatic ( for example, H. hepaticus and H. bilis ) species.

Helicobacter pylori is a microaerophilic member of this genus and is the main cause of gastric and duodenal ulcer and a major risk factor for gastric carcinoma. The bacterium surrounds himself with ammonia, which is produced from the cleavage of urea by urease. This ammonia coat it is protected from the stomach acid. As evidence of Helicobacter urease test is used.
