Helios Airways

Helios Airways was a Cypriot airline.

History

Helios Airways was founded as the first private airline of Cyprus in 1999. The company was headed by Georgios Mouskos, Vice- President was Kyriakos Christofidis.

Objectives

Since 2001, the Company operated not only the Charter but also the scheduled air service. Thus, of Paphos and Larnaca from the objectives Aberdeen, Amsterdam, Basel, Belfast, Billund, Birmingham, Bristol, Budapest, Dublin, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Copenhagen, Liverpool, London ( Luton, Gatwick), Madrid, Milan, Manchester, Newcastle, Palma, Prague, Sofia, Warsaw and Zurich fly. The machine utilization was approximately 75 %.

In March 2006, the tour operator Libra Holidays, owner of the Helios Airways confirmed since 2004 that it has established a new airline called Ajet in January, which will take over the flight operations of the Helios Airways. In future charter services are only offered. Helios would only till the completion of the accident investigation (see below) in the Libra Group exist, but no longer offer air services.

In October 2006, also announced the successor company Ajet until the end of 2006 completely adjust the flight operations.

Incidents

  • A Boeing 737-300 airline crashed near Athens on 14 August 2005. See: Helios Airways Flight 522
  • On Friday, August 19, 2005 ( five days after Flight 522) was diverted in the UK for safety reasons, a Boeing 737. The pilot reported problems with the flaps. Then the plane was diverted with 177 passengers on board on the London Stansted Airport. Originally, the machine was supposed to land on the Luton Airport. The passengers were able to leave the machine without any problems, according to Helios.
