Hellmuth Stachel

Hellmuth Stachel (* October 6, 1942 in Graz) is an Austrian mathematician and professor of geometry at the Technical University of Vienna. He is known for his contributions to geometry, kinematics and CAD.

Life

His parents were elementary school teachers. His father came a few months after his birth as a soldier killed. After attending elementary school in Trofaiach and the Federal Real Gymnasium in Leoben, he studied at the University of Graz and mathematics at the Technical University of Graz Descriptive Geometry and received his PhD in 1969 with Fritz phil Hohenberg Dr.. in mathematics, astronomy and philosophy. In 1971 he completed his habilitation at the Technical University of Graz. From 1979 to 1980 he was Professor of Geometry at the University of Leoben. In 1980 he was appointed Full Professor at the Technical University of Vienna. Professor sting is married since 1966 and has two grown children.

Hellmuth Stachel was twice a visiting professor in China, namely in August 1984 at the South China University of Technology, Guangzhou, and in October 1989. At Tongji University in Shanghai

Professor sting also took over duties in the International Society for Geometry and Graphics ( ISGG ). In 1990 he was elected Chairman of the Company and from 1994 he was Vice - President of the Society. In 1996, he created an international scientific journal, the Journal for Geometry and Graphics and has since been one of the senior editors. The aim of this journal is to promote scientific research, teaching and methodology in the field of geometric artwork by dissemination of new results. His retirement took place on 1 October 2011.

Research

Hellmuth Stachel wrote three technical books ( in collaboration with other scholars) and about 120 scientific articles on classical and descriptive geometry, kinematics and computer aided design. He studied flexible polyhedra in Euclidean space and in the Lobachevsky space.

Awards and prizes

1991 was Hellmuth Stachel elected a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. In 1993 he received the " German - Austrian university - Software Award " for the development of CAD 3D educational programs, 2004 Steve M. Slaby Award .. On 1 November 2010, Hellmuth Stachel was honorary doctorate from the Technical University of Dresden.
