Help Conquer Cancer

Help Conquer Cancer is one of the World Community Grid project for distributed computing. The aim of the project is the X-ray crystallography of proteins to improve, which will have the consequence that previously unknown parts of the human proteome can be described and especially understanding the development and progression of cancer is improved.

Currently, scientists at the Hauptman - Woodward Medical Research Institute in Buffalo have more than 86 million crystallography experiments performed for more than 9,400 proteins. As a result, they have 86 million pictures of these proteins that were created by the X-ray crystallography. Each of these images must be checked for certain characteristics. A complete analysis of the imaging material would take with a single PC nearly 100,000 years. There are proteins are found that are related to cancer and so can be used for early detection of cancer. The analysis of proteins that are associated with cancer, may also allow for novel pharmaceutical intervention.

To participate in a small program (called "Grid - client " ) must be installed after registering on the website of World Community Grid, which is available for Windows, Linux and Mac under the BOINC software. This program covers from the website then a task package.

The results of the calculations will be provided in the public domain of research.
