Henri-Auguste Barbier

Henri Auguste Barbier ( born April 28, 1805 in Paris, † February 14, 1882 in Nice ) was a French satirist.

Barber studied law and graduated successfully from. Despite various possibilities barber never worked as a lawyer, but devoted himself since his studies on the writing. Along with Alphonse Royer he could make his debut in 1830 with the novel Les mauvais garcons. In this work, draw the two opulent paintings of medieval society in France.

Since his studies politically interested and engaged, Barbier addressed the events of the July Revolution in many satires. In his major work Iambes et poèmes (EA 1831), he lashed out, inter alia, the decline of morals, the pervasive corruption, the shameless greed of upstarts and opportunists who after 1830, given the fate of France, and the senseless idolatry of Napoleon Bonaparte.

Iambes et poèmes 1832 were very successful translated by Lebrecht Günther forester under the title lashes for the great nation. A selection can also be found in Emanuel Geibel five books of French poetry.

In addition to his native France Barbier employed but also with the political Situatuion in other countries, such as he described in Il pianto ( 1833) the political struggle in Italy and Laza (1837 ) he broke a lance for the fate of the British and Irish laborers. With time, however, important in his work the political prosecution of a certain mild wisdom of old age; as an example here would be the title Satires (1865 ) should be mentioned.

Barber worked as a freelance writer in Paris and was elected in 1869 as one of the 40 immortals to the Académie française. To 1877, Barber settled in Nice, where he died at the age of almost 77 years on 14 February 1882.
